Brief profile

Karl Aberer studied mathematics at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate in theoretical computer science in 1991. From 1991 to 1992 he was postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1992 he joined the Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute (IPSI) of GMD in Germany, where he became manager of the research division Open Adaptive Information Management Systems in 1996.

Since 2000 he has been full professor at the ETH Lausanne where he heads the Distributed Information Systems Laboratory of the School of Computer and Communications Sciences. Between 2002 and 2004 Karl Aberer was chairman of the Institute for Core Computing Science at the Department for Computer and Communication Sciences at the ETH Lausanne. Since 2005 he has been director of the NCCR “Mobile Information and Communication Systems“(NCCR MICS).

Karl Aberer has been a member of the Swiss Science and Technology Council since 2004. He was born in Hohenems, Austria on 5 August 1962. He is married and the father of three children.
