Prof. Dr. Sabine Süsstrunk
Sabine Süsstrunk has been a professor and director of the Image and Visual Representation Lab at the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at the ETH Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) since 1999.
Since September 2025, she has also been Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC) at EPFL. From 2015 to 2020, she was the first Director of the Digital Humanities Institute (DHI) at the Collège des humanités (CdH). Her main areas of research include computer photography, computational imaging, artificial intelligence, and image quality and aesthetics.
She is a founding member of the EPFL-WISH Foundation (Women in Science and Humanities) and served as its President from 2014 to 2018. Since 2022, she has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Study Foundation. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation SRG SSR and of Largo Films SA. Between 2016 and 2020, she represented EPFL on the Board of Trustees and the Committee of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
She has received numerous awards for her scientific work, including the IS&T/SPIE 2013 Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year Award for her contributions to colour image processing, computer photography and image quality, the IS&T Raymond C. Bowman Award (2018), the EPFL AGEPoly IC Polysphere Award for Excellence in Teaching (2020) and the Royal Photographic Society's Award for Imaging Science (2025). She is a Fellow of ELLIS, IEEE and IS&T, and a full individual member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW).
