The SSC makes policy for science

This means that it takes a holistic view of the education, research and innovation system (the ERI system) and develops independent recommendations for its long-term, strategic development.

‘Policy for Science’ encompasses the shaping of government framework conditions that characterise the ERI system, including funding, research priorities, institutional structures, career paths and the regulatory environment in which education, research and innovation are conducted. The aim is to strengthen the long-term performance and sustainability of the ERI system.

By contrast, ‘Science for Policy’ refers to the use of scientific findings, expertise and advice in political decision-making processes across all policy areas (e.g. health, the environment, the economy).
