On 12 August 2020 the Federal Council appointed Sabine Süsstrunk, professor at the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at the EPF Lausanne, as president of the Swiss Science Council (SSC).
Sabine Süsstrunk is Full Professor and Director of the Image and Visual Representation Lab in the School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, since 1999. From 2015-2020, she was also the first Director of the Digital Humanities Institute (DHI), College of Humanities (CdH). Her main research areas are in computational photography, computational imaging, machine learning, and computational image quality and aesthetics.
Sabine Süsstrunk is Founding Member and Member of the Board (President 2014-2018) of the EPFL-WISH (Women in Science and Humanities) Foundation, Member of the Board of the SRG SSR (Swiss Radio and Television Corporation), and Member of the Board of Largo Films SA. From 2016-2020, she was the EPFL representative on the Swiss National Science Foundation Board and its committee.
Sabine Süsstrunk received the IS&T/SPIE 2013 Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year Award for her contributions to color imaging, computational photography, and image quality, and the 2018 IS&T Raymond C. Bowman and the 2020 EPFL AGEPoly IC Polysphere Awards for excellence in teaching. Sabine is a Fellow of IEEE and IS&T, and a Full Member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW.
Sabine Süsstrunk is very familiar with the internationally networked Swiss education, research and innovation system, and with its funding mechanisms and promotion activities. The Swiss Science Council is an extra-parliamentary commission under the Research and Innovation Promotion Act, whose members and president are appointed by the Federal Council. On its own initiative or on behalf of the Federal Council or the EAER, the SCC advises the Federal Council on all matters of research and innovation policy. It currently comprises 15 members with proven interdisciplinary competencies in science, professional education and innovation.
